1. RYAN HIGA
At age 14 and out of sheer boredom, Ryan gathered his neighborhood friends and made home videos using a VHS camcorder…no editing software, not even a tripod. Although quiet and reserved in nature, the videos showcased the creative and comedic side of him. They made videos of stunts and tricks, their version of the “Blair Witch Project” and even a Napoleon Dynamite remake. He loved to make people laugh!

Ryan was born and raised in Hilo, a small town of 50,000 people, on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was born on June 6, 1990 to parents, Wendell and Luci Higa. Having an older brother, Kyle, kept him competitive academically and athletically. He was your typical kid. From age 5 he played basketball and did judo and loved to watch TV and play video and computer games. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in judo and wrestling, earning local and state titles and received his black belt in Judo.

With nothing else to do after a night of bowling or movies, he organized his school friends to make videos. In 2006 came the discovery of Youtube, a digital camera, tripod and editing software. At first they did a lot of lip synching videos, then skits with a plot. He did a lot of rants…things you think about but are afraid to speak….he said it, yet always trying to be funny and not offensive. He started posting videos on Youtube because it was an easier way to share them with his friends….not knowing they would become so popular.

Since 2007, his MySpace friends has grown from 27,000 to over 178,000. His Youtube channel has over 2 million Subscribers and became #1 Most Subscribed All Time in August 2009. His over 60 videos have more than 341 million views.

Ryan is currently a student at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, majoring in Film and hopes to be successful some day in the entertainment industry as an actor, writer, producer or director
……. or perhaps, fulfill his dream of starring in his own TV series.

2. Kevjumba
19-year-old Kevin Wu is the owner of the highly popular Youtube channel “KevJumba.” Wu started posting comedy videos on Youtube during his Junior year in High School when he was inspired by the stand-up performances of his idol, Dave Chapelle. He quickly developed a passion in comedy and creating videos. On July 24, 2008, Wu started a second channel on Youtube called “Jumbafund” that he publishes videos to, and donates the proceeds he earns from advertising to charity. Between both channels, Wu has garnered more than 1,300,000 subscribers and 100,000,000 video views on Youtube. Through Jumbafund, Wu has donated several thousands of dollars to charities such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Red Cross to support relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti.
Jeff Yang of the San Francisco Chronicle describes Wu as perhaps the most interesting elite Youtube personality, going from obscurity to Youtube’s most subscribed comedian in a few months. According to Yang, Wu’s videos are not strictly comedy, consisting mostly of “stuff that Kevin finds interesting, weird or irritating.” Yang describes Wu’s videos as “mesmerizing”, although he has difficulty pinpointing why. Yang ultimately feels it is due to Wu’s self-confidence.
Wu’s videos have received replies from Jessica Alba and Baron Davis. He has received sponsorships from JCPenney and T-Mobile (among others), and starred in an online series for HBO. In October of 2009, Wu served as a spokesperson for the “B Here Tour”, a college music & comedy tour intended to help create awareness against Hepatitis B.
